The major trends of research activity:

1. The study of research principles of resort factors rational use of the Republic;
2. The study of the mechanism of therapeutic effect and efficacy of treatment-and-prophylactic use of natural factors;
3. The development of methods of sanitary-and-resort therapy;
4. The development of methods of rehabilitation therapy using the natural and preformed physical factors.

The Division on the Study of Resort Resources deals with the revealing of natural therapy factors and the definition of the possibilities of their use, medical and resort validation of the development of sanitary-and-resort and sanitary-and-restorative institutions in Azerbaijan Republic; the development of control criteria of qualitative naphthalan values, fungotherapy, mineral water of Azerbaijan, technological production of medical drugs.

The Department of Clinical and Experimental Investigations of Therapeutic Effect of Natural Factors is headed by A.A.Eyvazov.

The Department has 3 subdivisions:
     1. Subdivision on the Development and Balneotherapy Use;
     2.Clinicoimmunologic laboratory;
     3. Biochemical laboratory.
This subdivision has also hydrotherapy, naphthalan therapy, fungotherapy and physiotherapy rooms.

The Department of Resort Naphthalan Therapy (head – prof. Guliyeva S.) is functioning at Naphthalan resort. A problem of naphthalan oil has a priority over all mentioned Departments of the Institute dealing with the solution of a series of problems: the study of the mechanism of naphthalan oil effect on the organism, the development of indications and contraindications for different methods, the development and naphthalan therapy, combined methods of therapy with naphthalan oil and its drugs.
Recent investigations demonstrated immunocorective, antioxidant, antiaggregate and hemocoagulative features of naphthalan (G.S.Abiyev, S.A.Guliyeva, S.M.Samedov). There were introduced the following new methods of therapy with naphthalan oil: in the form of dimexidnaphthalan emulsion (A.Kh.Guliyev, S.S.Kerimova) combined with ultrasound, electromagnetic waves of decimetre range (A.V.Musayev, S.G.Huseynova, R.G.Zeynalov, R.A.Gafarzade). The indications to the effective use of naphthalan therapy for certain diseases were widened in the past years due to modified methods. Naphthalan oil has been first successfully used for otorhinolaryngeal diseases (A.A.Eyvazov), chronic prostatitis (M.M.Salmanov) diabetic angiopathy (S.N.Nasrullayeva, D.Z.Namazov), exudative pleuritis (A.B.Insanov, A.V.Musayev, E.Kh.Gazvinova), ischemic heart disease (T.G.Huseynov).

The Department of Medical Rehabilitation consists of 3 clinical divisions – therapeutic (head – Beglyarov M.), neurological (head – Zeynalov R.), arthrologic (head Kerimova S.) the main goals of which are:

1.       The development and modification of methods of physical factor complex use in neurologic, cardiovascular, gastroenterologic, arthrologic and other more expanded diseases.

2.     The study of indications for rehabilitation therapy in general structure of morbidity, validation of perspectives of rehabilitation therapy organization in Azerbaijan Republic.

3.     The development of the methods of restorative therapy of wounded patients with the injury of the nervous and locomotor sytems as a result of gunshot injuries and war trauma.
The important and actual papers are the papers aimed at the rehabilitation of wounded patients. As a result of investigations an original conception of differentiation of varying and complicated character injuries and peripheral nerves has been created. With this respect a program of rehabilitation therapeutic measures has been prepared (A.V.Musayev, S.G.Huseynova).
The methods of using the low frequency alternating magnetic field, decimetre waves, complex modulated pulsed magnetic field, trental-and-cavinton electrophoresis and climatic factors of Absheron peninsula (Mardakiany), oxygen and chloride-sodic iodobromine baths have been scientifically validated in the treatment and rehabilitation of patients with cerebrovascular pathology (A.V.MusayevR.G.Zeynalov, F.K.Balakishiyeva, L.R.Nuriyeva).
The development of the methods of treatment of neurologic signs of spinal osteochondrosis, in particular vertebrogenic and radicular syndromes, diabetic polyneuropathy take an important place in the field of peripheral nervous system diseases.
Scientific papers devoted to the therapy and rehabilitation of rheumatic diseases spread in Azerbaijan are of potential interest. The effective methods of therapy of inflammatory and degenerative diseases of joints as well as complications of extremity war trauma with complex use of contemporary methods of physiobalneotherapy have been developed.
The importance of the problem of a patient's rehabilitation with the diseases of cardiovascular system and diabetes mellitus, in particular with resort factors identifies the basic scientific topics of the Therapeutic Department. In recent years new methods of management using iodobromine, Darydag mineral waters, vortex baths combined with sinusoidally modulated current, decimetre waves, laser acupuncture and other physical factors have been developed and scientifically validated (M.I.Begliarov, I.I.Alekperov). The achievements in the field of rehabilitation of gastroenterologic diseases, namely for chronic hepatitis and gastric and duodenal diseases are of great scientific interest.
The development of treatment-and-rehabilitation complexes using natural therapy factors, the creation of rehabilitation programs related directly to the rational use of natural resources of Azerbaijan that as a whole is an important social and economical problem.

There are 91 theses maintained at the Institute: 14 - DSc theses, 77 - PhD theses. 55 monographies and educational kits are published.
In the past 15 years the Institute has 14 innovations and more than 60 methodical recommendations.
The scientists of the Institute take an active part in the work of International Congresses, Symposiums and Meetings. They are the members of International Associations of Neurologists, Rehabilitologists, Physiatrists, Cardiologists, Urologists, Pathophysiologists, the members of International Association for the Study of Pain, the members of European Federation of Neurological Societies and World Federation of Neurology. They are the members of Editorial Board of a series of International Journals.
The students of Medical University, University of Physical Culture, physicians from Turkey and Iran and physicians from many treatment-and-prophylactic institutions take courses at the Institute.

A.A.Eyvazov, I.I.Alekperov, F.M.Efendiyeva, S.A.Guliyeva are Doctors of Sciences and leading research investigators of the Institute. S.N.Nasrullayeva, R.G.Zeynalov, M.I.Begliarov, F.K.Balakishiyeva, S.G.Huseynova, L.B.Nabiyeva, S.S.Kerimova, M.M.Salmanov, G.Kh.Bahramova, L.G.Kalinichenko, P.S.Mehdiyev, E.G.Isazade have PhD degrees.
